Adobe Labs offers a great playground with incredible tools to experiment with exisiting photographs and eventually the creation of 'new' images thereof.
This presentation shows my first two trials of a technique that I am currently developing (January 2012).
My best advice so far is to not apply it to faces - unless you need an image showing a mummie or some monster.
